Many transracial adoptions occur without a deep examination of classism and racism, which can lead to adoptees being deracinated from their biological family and roots. Belonging isn’t about sameness—it’s about connection. As a Black transracial adoptee from foster care, I struggled to find my place in the world. Belinda, adopted as a teenager, did too—but in ways shaped by her own unique experience. Despite our differences, our mentoring relationship challenges traditional ideas of adoption, family, and mentorship. This keynote introduces the Sondersphere, a model that sees belonging as fluid rather than fixed. By centering Boundary Spanners—people who cross social and cultural divides—we can move beyond outdated adoption narratives and cultivate communities that honor complexity over conformity and challenge traditional ideas of family.
